Rachel Corrie soccer tournament

Concept Paper, 2008

Particular target group: disaffected youth.

Adnan Abu Al Sa’ud

Problem Analysis (Justifications)

Rachel Corrie soccer tournament came in response to the following issues:

  1. •  Lack of safe sport plots slated for practicing sport activities by the youth at the targeted areas that were exposed to the repetitive Israeli breaches that turned their homes into mounds of rubble, which by course of time turning into dumps--adjacent to the population residing in southern Rafah refugee camp.

  2. •  The exacerbation of rage amongst youth as a result of infighting and lawlessness that have recently taken place in the Gaza Strip which led to a retreat of values of good citizenship, democracy, participation and humanitarian action; with all replaced by exchange of accusations and violent actions.

  3. • Dragging of the youth generation into the abyss of infighting and disrespect of others, which had been reflected in various walks of life including the retreat in sport activities in the sport clubs and amongst school students. These young people quitted their favorite sport hobbies and slipped into fanatic partisan infighting. According to Ministry of Education statistics sport activities retreated by 84% in the last year due to compensating for educational hours lost as a result of the bloody events that took place recently across the Gaza Strip.

  4. •  The lack of entertainment and recreation in the targeted area as being the poorest as well as an extremely marginalized area, where the average income for one family is only 60 USD per months. This circumstance led the youth to desperately concentrate on ways to make a living to sponsor their families thus neglecting the practice of their sport activities.

•  The absence of pure international humanitarian intervention as a result of every assistance reaching the Gaza Strip being politicized - contributing to the existing polarization amongst the population.

In the light of analyzing the problem, it turns out that it is quite important to make a qualitative intervention on the part of the concerned parties (individuals/ institutions/ entities or committees) towards preserving the continuation of the civil dialogue in a practical and real way that affects the average man in the street. Knowing that the sport dialogue that our team seeks to reach echoes the youth needs at the targeted area, and conforms with Olympia’s (Washington) endeavor to build confidence between the local community's members themselves and between them and the outside world.

Goal

Contributing in forging a tangible aspect of values such as democracy, good citizenship, respect of other nations and participation amongst the population of southern Rafah refugee camp through launching a youth initiative able to organize community activities of a sport nature.
