Reeling from the Israeli occupation, two years of brutal siege, and the effects of a violent struggle between Hamas and Fatah factions, Palestinians in Gaza face a grim and grinding daily fight to prevent social collapse and cultural extinction.
From the offices of the governors to the many NGO’s operating in Gaza, organizations and individuals are making it a primary goal to heal the wounds of the vicious factional infighting that has scarred the people of Gaza.
The Rachel Corrie Football Tournament was conceived by citizens in Rafah as a way to promote healing within their own community by providing a wholesome activity for young and old, particularly during the Ramadan season.
The Rachel Corrie Football Tournament is a safe place for the people of the Yebna neighborhood to gather. It provides a month-long, community event that transcends factional identities and where neighbors can come together as friends--as Palestinians.
Why A Soccer Tournament ?
“Our playground is not the only one in the area but what makes it distinct other than its location [next to the Egypt border] is that young people from different political colors [Fatah/Hamas/PFLP factions] come almost everyday not talk about politics but to practice sport with each other while other playgrounds attracts only those who are affiliated to a certain political line. As a matter of fact the daily activities as well as the annual tournament manifests a social and sportsmanship bond, so to speak, amongst the people of our community.”
